Critics Choice Movie Award for Best Sci fi Horror Movie

Sci-fi is one of the most exciting genres in the entire movie industry, and while the quality of sci-fi movies has declined in recent years, we have included some of the most popular sci-fi movies that are truly good, unlike current Hollywood films.

I rarely see and enjoy Hollywood films, but this was one of the few that I did.

This is based on the Critics Choice Movie Award for Best Sci-Fi Horror Movie, and I didn’t include all of the nominees, simply the most popular ones.

Looper (Winner)

Time travel exists in a future society, but it is only available to those with the resources to pay for it on the black market. When the mob intends to eliminate someone, it sends the target back in time, where a hit man known as a looper awaits to complete the deed. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is one such hired gun, and he does a good job until his bosses decide to “close the loop,” sending Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) back in time to be assassinated.

Prometheus (nominee)

The discovery of a clue to mankind’s origins on Earth leads a group of explorers to the universe’s darkest corners. The expedition is led by two talented young scientists. Shaw (Noomi Rapace) expects to meet a race of compassionate, godlike beings who will validate her religious ideas, but Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) is trying to destroy any spiritual conceptions. The scientists and their shipmates, however, are unprepared for the unfathomable terrors that await them.


Gravity (Winner)

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a medical engineer embarking on her first space shuttle trip. Her pilot is veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), who is flying his final mission before retiring. The shuttle is destroyed during a routine space walk by Ryan and Matt, leaving them trapped in deep space with no link to Earth and little hope of rescue. As their dread grows to terror, they realise that the only way to return home may be to travel further into space.

Star Trek Into Darkness (nominee)

The crew of the Starship Enterprise returns home after an act of terrorism within its own organisation destroys most of Starfleet and everything it stands for, leaving Earth in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) takes his crew (Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, and Zoe Saldana) on a mission to capture a one-man weapon of mass devastation, launching them all into an epic game of life and death.


Interstellar (Winner)

A global crop plague and a second Dust Bowl will gradually render Earth uninhabitable in the future. Professor Brand (Michael Caine), a brilliant NASA scientist, is working on plans to save humanity by sending Earth’s population via a wormhole to a new home. But first, Brand must dispatch former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of scientists through the wormhole and across the galaxy to determine which of three planets could be humanity’s new home.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (nominee)

Ten years after simian virus wiped out most of the world’s homosapiens, genetically modified ape Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his ever-growing band of followers have created a thriving colony in Muir Woods, just outside San Francisco. Meanwhile, a tiny band of human survivors arises, forcing Caesar, as leader, to confront the dual task of defending his people while also re-establishing a relationship with the remaining human population – the latter being Caesar’s secret wish.


Ex Machina (Winner)

Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer for a large Internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at the private house of Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), the brilliant CEO of his company. Caleb discovers upon his arrival that he has been chosen to be the human component in a Turing test to assess Ava’s (Alicia Vikander), a gorgeous robot’s, skills and consciousness. However, it quickly becomes clear that Ava is far more self-aware and manipulative than either man had anticipated.

The Martian (nominee)

When astronauts launch out from Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), who was presumed dead following a violent storm. With only a few resources, the stranded visitor must rely on his brains and will to live on the dangerous world. Meanwhile, back on Earth, NASA and a multinational team of experts labour feverishly to bring him home, while his crewmates devise their own daring rescue effort.


Arrival (Winner)

When massive spacecraft crash-land at 12 different sites around the planet, linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) heads an elite team of investigators. As the world prepares for war, Banks and her crew must race against the clock to find a means to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. In order to solve the mystery, she takes a risk that could endanger her life and possibly the entire human race.

Star Trek Beyond (nominee)

An unexpected attack in space compels the Enterprise to crash-land on an unknown world. Krall (Idris Elba) launched the assault, a lizard-like ruler who gets his energy by sucking the life out of his victims. Krall requires an ancient and valuable artefact aboard the severely damaged spacecraft. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the rest of the crew are stranded in a rough wilderness and must now combat a terrible alien race while trying to find a way off their inhospitable planet.


Get Out (Winner)

Chris and his fiancée, Rose, have reached the meet-the-parents stage of their relationship, and she invites him to a weekend trip with Missy and Dean. Chris initially interprets the family’s overly accommodating conduct as worried attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial romance, but as the weekend progresses, a succession of progressively horrifying revelations leads him to a truth he could never have anticipated.

Blade Runner 2049 (nominee)
